Overview

This Board of Governors certificate program is designed for full-time students who need to improve their English language skills for post-secondary study. The program is divided into two categories. English as a Second Language (ESL) which focuses on establishing a strong foundation in the four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening in levels elementary and intermediate; and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), which focuses on using these four skills for academic purposes.
Following the completion of this Board of Governors certificate program, students are eligible for entry into an academic diploma or post-graduate program.

This Lambton College program is licensed to and delivered by Cestar College (PDF), a licensed private career college in Toronto, Ontario. Students who are registered at are students of a public college and as such, will receive full credit from Lambton College for all Lambton College courses completed at the Cestar College campus in Toronto. Students who meet program graduation requirements will graduate with a credential from Lambton College. Students may be scheduled to have classes on Saturdays.

Courses
Reading - Level 1
This speaking and listening course has been developed for elementary students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, students develop reading strategies like skimming, scanning, inferencing, sequencing, and paraphrasing, as well as increase reading comprehension skills through a variety of activities, such as fill in the blanks, matching, multiple choice, and true and false. The course evaluation involves testing and applying new vocabulary (content vocabulary and the Academic Word List (Academic Word List) to the writing process. An online extension tool is used in the computer lab. The goal of this course is to stimulate students intellectually and emotionally so that they will use and retain more English (CEFR A1 - A2).
Writing - Level 1
This writing course has been developed for elementary students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, students learn how to write and organize paragraphs for academic writing. The course evaluation involves testing and writing assignments. The goal of the course is to help students understand the process of controlled paragraph writing in English (CEFR A1 - A2).
Speaking & Listening - Level 1
This speaking and listening course has been developed for elementary students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, students discuss topics of interest to themselves and the world they live in as well as develop their listening skills through the use of audio tools. The course evaluation places an emphasis on applying new vocabulary (content vocabulary and the Academic Word List (AWL) and speaking frameworks (grammar) to oral discourse. An online extension tool is used in the computer lab. The goal of this course is to stimulate students intellectually and emotionally so that they will use and retain more English (CEFR A1 - A2).
Grammar - Level 1
This grammar course has been developed for elementary students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, discussion revolves around the form, function, and practice of the target grammar. The course evaluation involves in-class activities and testing. An online extension tool is used in the computer lab. The goal of the course is to teach the basic building blocks of grammatical structures and apply them to speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities (CEFR A1 - A2).
Pronunciation - Level 1
This pronunciation course has been developed for elementary students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, students practice pronunciation for clear speaking. The course evaluation places a strong emphasis on producing vowel and consonant sounds as well as applying stress, rhythm, and intonation following English pronunciation and speech patterns. The goal of the course is to encourage students to see good pronunciation as a tool for overall communicative effectiveness in English (CEFR A1-A2).
Fluency Friend - Level 1
The Fluency Friend component of the ESL/EAP program is unique to The Lambton Institute of English. Each week, students enrolled in the program will meet with a Fluency Friend in order to make conversation and interact socially one-on-one with a native speaker of Canadian English. The goal of this component of the program is to increase fluency in English in a fun, informal, and authentic atmosphere. (CEFR A1 - A2)
Discussion Circle - Level 1
The Discussion Circle component of the ESL/EAP program is unique to the Lambton Institute of English. One of the biggest challenges for English language learners is socializing and adapting to Canadian culture. With this challenge in mind, students enrolled in the program will meet in small groups of international and Canadian students in order to discuss a variety of general topics. Under the guidance and facilitation of the team leader, students can fine-tune their public speaking techniques, learn to debate and defend their viewpoints, and improve speaking self-confidence. Some lessons may be off-campus, allowing students to interact in an authentic environment. The goal of this component of the program is to increase student confidence when interacting in larger social situations in Canadian culture. (CEFR A1 - A2)
Computer Lab - Level 1
Students enrolled in the program attend computer labs in order to supplement course textbooks as well as engage in stimulating and instructive online exercises and activities in order to increase the speed of English language proficiency and acquisition. The goal of these online course extensions is to provide intensive practice to reinforce skills learned within each course component under the supervision of the language lab technologist. Self-Study - Level 1
Self-Study is an integral component of the ESL/EAP program at the Lambton Institute of English. Each week, students participate in a supervised tutorial in order to collaborate on group assignments, complete homework, work on oral presentations, and study for tests. A tutor will be available to answer any questions related to student studies. The goal of Self-Study is to provide support and encourage student success in all aspects of the ESL/EAP program. Reading & Writing - Level 2
This reading and writing course has been developed for intermediate students who are non-native speakers of the English language. In the classroom, students read about topics of interest to themselves and the world they live in as well as develop their writing skills by learning paragraph and essay structure. The course evaluation places an emphasis on applying new vocabulary (content vocabulary and the Academic Word List (AWL)) and grammatical forms to writing projects. An online extension tool is used in the computer lab. The language lab portion is designed to apply the concepts taught in the lecture. Students are required to demonstrate these skills through a series of hands-on exercises. (CEFR B1)

The goal of the course is to teach increasingly difficult grammatical concepts and apply them to speaking and writing activities (CEFR B1).

Technology Requirements
It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.
Internet Speed Requirements
For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.
Minimum Laptop Requirements
In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.
Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
