A disability is defined by the Human Rights Code. Examples of a disability include, but are not limited to:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Blind and Low Vision
  • Deaf, Deafened and Hard of Hearing
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Medical Disabilities
  • Mental Health Disabilities
  • Mild Acquired Brain Injury
  • Mobility Impairments

Students with disabilities have the right to academic accommodations. To access these rights, the students are responsible for:

  • Making an appointment with a counsellor in the Services for Students with Disabilities office.
  • Presenting documentation to the SSD office that includes a clear diagnostic statement from a qualified practitioner. Students will be asked for documentation to validate their disability unless the disability is evident.
Documentation Requirements

Documentation is required for each specific disability. Please contact the SSD office for more information regarding the specific requirements.

Note: For students with disabilities entering college from high school, interim accommodation based on IPRC/IEP may be assigned for one term only; thus allowing the students a period of grace in which to obtain up to date documentation. For other disabilities, consideration may be given for temporary or interim (one term only) accommodation while full documentation is obtained.

Some conditions may qualify for temporary accommodations, please check with SSD office.

Documentation from appopriate professional must include a clear diagnostic statement. Please be advised that all confiential files in SSD office are shredded after 10 years.

High school records remain at the last high school attended. You are responsible for obtaining these records and bringing them to the college or requesting to have the records forwarded to the college.

Students with disabilities are required to meet their program’s admission and progression requirements.

Academic accommodations will be determined during a student-counsellor consultation and accommodations will be made based on documentation with the intent to minimize the effects of the disability.
